29.08.2006: The FPÖ and Associated Groups (2002)
The year 2002 witnessed severe infighting between the relatively pragmatic, neo-liberal wing of party leader and vice-chancellor Susanne Riess-Passer and the fundamentalist social-national wing led by Carinthian governor Joerg Haider, which almost split the party. Following the loss of delegate support at a meeting in Knittelfeld in September 2002, Riess-Passer resigned from her positions, as did Karl-Heinz Grasser (federal minister of financial affairs) and parliamentary fraction leader Peter Westenthaler. In a second wave of resignations, more high-ranking party members (including MP Peter Sichrovsky and Gerhard Hager, now a member of the European Parliament), followed their example. ÖVP, the senior coalition partner, reacted by terminating the coalition, which no longer had the backing of the majority of FPÖ parliamentary members.

27.08.2006: Austrian National Socialism
The right-wing extremist FPOE (Freiheitliche Partei Oesterreichs - Austrian Freedom Party) under Joerg Haider gained 27% of the votes at the Austrian national elections on October 3rd 1999. Now the FPOE is the second strongest party in Austria (after the SPOE, the social democrats), in some regions it is even the strongest.
These elections were won with the help of racist paroles against a foreign infiltration. The strongest right-wing extremist party in Europe the FPOE - was not voted for in spite of their racism, but because of it. With the help of racism, antisemitism, sexism and agitation against social parasites you can always win elections in Austria.

Right-wing extremism can be equated neither with National Socialism nor with neo-Fascism or neo-Nazism. Neo-Nazism, a legal term, is understood as the attempt to propagate, in direct defiance of the law (Verbotsgesetz), Nazi ideology or measures such as the denial, playing- down, approval or justification of Nazi mass murder, especially the Holocaust. The term "right- wing extremist" is applied here primarily to describe, on the basis of passages in books and magazines, the political-ideological profile of such organizations and how their representatives and activists act and react in the political arena.
